I'm hired! Travelers' Tales wants to make the most of this crucial launch period for Sand in My Bra, so they've offered me the opportunity to work full time out of their office for the first two weeks in July. I'll be working with Krista, and our new intern Ken, to maximize our pr efforts for the book. We need more reviews. We need to get in more gift stores. And we need to get more radio gigs. This of course is just the tip of the ice berg. Exposure, exposure, exposure!

After those two weeks they’re sending me to Montreal Canada for a week of stealth promotion at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival. It is the largest comedy festival in the world and 1.4 million people went to it last year.

At the end of the month we have a reading at Capitola Book Cafe, and we’re doing what we can to book up more. Stay tuned to our events page as we add on more readings for the fall.

  1. jen – I was just joking with my editor that if this writing thing doesn’t work out, I could always do PR…since I’m always busting with ideas that the actual PR person assigned to my last book seemed to ignore, lose or let slide til the opportunity had withered on the vine…
Dang! I want to work out of the office for two weeks! Reckon the interns would watch my feral young?
In other news, BUST thinks I can squeeze a review in this issue though technically it’s all assigned, so have that publicist who isn’t you send me a copy pronto b/f I go to california on the 26th.

  2. Hi Ayun,
Thanks so much for hooking us up with the review! Krista sent you the book to your home address last Thursday, so it should arrive today or tomorrow.

And yes, it’s going to be great working out of the office with TT. They are my family, and as some backhistory, I was their publicist before I went on extended travel in 2001. Luckily Krista and I are friends and get along great.

Us authors always *think* we know what’s best for our books. But the realities of what can actually get done due to staffing, budget, and other work needs to be accounted for too. You should’ve seen the marketing plan I put together for this book and how little of it I was able to get done! The most important thing to know is to stay positive. It can be a waste of energy to be mad at a publisher for what they aren’t doing for you. That time and energy could be better spent spreading the good word. Authors that are great at self promotion only increase their chances of getting more and better book deals in their future.
    What do you think?

If you ever want to chat offline about the ideas you have for your upcoming book, I’d be happy to contribute additional ideas, or just act as a sounding board.
