Tonight I worked on the Market Research section of my book proposal. The book I want to pitch is a humorous, anti-self help book for the single woman.

I went to a big bookstore and scoured the aisles for similar books. In the market research section of your book proposal, it’s essential to report on:

*who’s your audience?
*why would the customer by your book?
*what kind of competition is out there?
*what are the similarities and differences between your book and the competition?

So, to hunt down the competition…

I went to the shelves that I thought my book would fit under and looked for similar books. I wrote down the title, author, publisher, and copyright date. I felt it was most important to list books that are fairly recent–as in within the last five years or so.

Off and on throughout my research on book proposals I’ve looked at dozens of web sites that want to tell you how to write your book proposal. Most of them are trying to sell you another book, or a course. Here’s one site that spells it out without making you buy a whole book.

Good luck and keep me posted.
