Hey, just wanted to let you know there’s a new publication coming to the west coast of Canada. They’re just in their preliminary stages, but are looking for articles. And they pay. Not a lot, but something is better than nothing, writers.

Travel Time News

What they want:
Non-fiction travel stories containing up to 1000 words. Articles should have a central focus–such as your search for the perfect orchid in the forests of Peru–a strong narrative and sense of place, and include some history of the region. They must also contain travel tips, an idea of cost, and booking information. We are also interested in travel book and restaurant reviews. We are not very attracted to travelogues, academic-style writing, or simple lists of places to see in a given locale. We are especially interested in tales that contain adventure in far-flung areas of the planet.

Details:
Articles may be sent by email, must be unpublished, or at least be ones for which you hold the rights. A letter of query is not necessary, but please include a short summary of your article. Photos may be sent as email attachments or by post with an SASE. After receiving your submission, it might take several months before we could confirm our intentions.

Pay: CAD$25-$50

  1. This is a good example of the need to exercise caution before submitting your work to an unknown publication. This ad has been popping up around the Internet for almost a year now, and although earlier versions claimed Issue 1 of this “magazine” was coming out Winter 2005, there is still no magazine. The publication has no Internet presence other than a Yahoo mail address that is occasionally used in the Craigslist version of this ad (and when is the last time you came across a legitimate, functioning business that didn’t have some sort of web site, or that used Yahoo for a business e-mail?). I live in Vancouver and work in the publishing industry, and I haven’t been able to discover any actual people who will admit to being involved with this project. Makes you wonder where those submissions will end up after the “several months” the authors are told to wait?

  2. Thanks for your feedback on our search for submissions. We are trying to collect interesting stories to actually start a publication. We are still struggling for decently-written articles to go ahead with the project. This isn’t some scam as you perhaps imply but a few writers who would like to start a publication. Submissions go nowhere if we can’t make a go of it. Seems like you’re the type of guy that shoots first and asks questions later. Maybe you’d like to offer help with the project.
