TAcover.jpg I know there are tons of summer reading lists floating around, but I thought the folks at Transitions Abroad deserved special props for putting together a unique selection of travel books to choose from. Parts of their July/August issue are online, but as far as I could tell, not this list. In the print version, each book listed is followed by a summary of the selection and why it should be on your summer list, so you really have to subscribe to TA to get the goods. But I’ll get you started with a list of their suggestions:

The Risks of Sunbathing Topless (mentioned here last summer), edited by Kate Chynoweth

The Lawrence Durrell Travel Reader
, edited by Clint Willis

The Thames, by Jonathan Schneer

S.A.H.M. I AM: Tales of a Stay-at-Home Mom in Europe
, by Christine Louise Hohlbaum

Schlepping Through the Alps: My Search for Austria’s Jewish Past With its Last Wandering Shepherd, by Sam Apple

Among Flowers: A Walk in the Himalaya
, by Jamaica Kincaid

Over Sand and Sea: A Traveler’s Tales
, by Patrick Pfister

Into a Paris Quartier, by Diane Johnson

And since it has been over a year, let me include a reminder that TA does accept submissions. According to their 05/06 editorial guidelines, submissions for the Nov/Dec ’05 issue are due August 15.

If you have anything to share regarding these topics: Adventure Travel Programs and Tours; Responsible Travel, including ecotours, community-based travel, and geotourism; Off-season travel, out-of-the-way places; The Mediterranean Basin and Africa areas, review their guidelines and submit soon! Happy reading and writing…
