My love for travel began with an issue of National Geographic and the movie, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. I was at a very influential age at the time, 13 or 14, and didn’t know much about travel, but I knew I wanted to see the world. As I grew older, other influences enhanced my love for travel, including the magazine, Transitions Abroad.
Founded in 1977, Transitions Abroad was created by Dr. Clay Hubbs to enlighten travelers, students, and teachers on the vast inexpensive travel opportunities. More than that, Dr. Hubbs also wanted to inform his readers about emerging into the local scene. Over the years, the magazine has turned into a excellent resource for those interested in studying, working, and living abroad. I read my first issue of the magazine seven years ago and ever since I’ve used the magazine to research countries, long and short term job opportunities, and international jobs.
And to celebrate their 30th anniversary, Transitions Abroad is holding a group of writing contests, Narrative Travel Writing, Expatriate Writing, and Student Writing. There is no submission fee and the selected articles will be presented on TransitionsAbroad.com. In addition, the first place winner will receive $250, $100 for second place, and $75 for third.
Interested in submitting an article for the 2007 Narrative Travel contest? I suggest reading the four 2006 winners, especially the first place article, An Exorcism in Zambia. The editors are looking for stories that grab the reader and submerge them in the local culture. To enter, paste or attach your essay (no more than 1,500 words) in an email, with “Narrative Travel Writing Essay Entry” in the subject line, to narrativewritingcontest@transitionsabroad.com. Don’t forget to your full name, address, and phone number. But get your entries in fast, the deadline is October 15, 2006.
