Hey students, wanna win some FREE travel?!
Well, hold your horses, because this isn’t just some RTW ticket that’s being raffled off. This is a dream trip for an aspiring travel journalist. The offer says Win a Trip, but if you read between the lines it asks, do you want an exhausting on the road internship that will end up being more rewarding that you could possibly imagine.
Who? Nick Kristof is the Op-Ed and TimesSelect columnist. Oh, and he also happens to be a Pulitzer Prize winner. He’s looking for a sturdy student over the age of 18 at an American College. According to the fine print, Nick is looking for a masochist.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: An essay no longer than 700 words on why you’re the perfect traveling companion for Nick Kristof. But, you’ll want to read his letter first. (And if you’re smart, you might want to do you own research on his background and interests. -but hey, I’m over 18 and can’t apply)
DEADLINE: April 20, 2006
PRIZE:
The winner will have an opportunity to submit for possible publication a regular report in the TimesSelect section of NYTimes.com and in The New York Times newspaper.

Nick wrote a great letter to potential applicants about what the trip will be about.
“I’m looking for a masochist. If your dream trip doesn’t involve a five-star hotel in Rome or Bora-Bora, but a bedbug-infested mattress in a malarial jungle as hungry jackals yelp outside – then read on.
“Over the next month, I’ll be holding a contest to find a university student to accompany me on a reporting trip to the developing world. I’m not sure where yet, and that will depend partly on what’s in the news at the time. But to give you a sense of the kind of travel I’m thinking of, the possibilities include a jaunt through rural Burundi and Rwanda in central Africa, or an odyssey from the coast of Cameroon inland to the heart of the Central African Republic …”
