This year’s BookExpo America/ Writer’s Digest Book Writer’s Conference will be held Wednesday, May 17, 2006.

Registration: $189
Location: Washington Convention Center
Time: 7:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Featured workshops include something for both published and unpublished, experienced and inexperienced writers and authors. A few notables include:

Travel Writing: People and Places
Speaker: L. Peat O’Neil

Show the people and you’ll show the place. Learn how to encourage conversations during your travels and you’ll capture dynamic dialogue for travel articles. Paint a portrait of place by showing the people you meet. This hands-on workshop covers capturing conversations for your article, writing short character portraits, and selecting anecdotes to advance the travel story.

strong>Extreme Query Letter Makeover
Speakers: Jane Friedman and Kristen Godsey

Witness the unbelievable transformation of weak and ineffective query letters into strong and persuasive works of art! You’ll watch in awe as two seasoned editors rip apart leads, gut wordiness, and patch together sales hooks so that you better understand what an editor immediately sees and responds to in your work. After this session, every query you write will be more compelling and more convincing to an editor or agent considering your work—whether it’s an article, novel, or memoir.

Pitch Slam
Agents and Editors TBA

Author/Attendees will have opportunities to make one-minute book proposal pitches to book industry agents and editors (replies limited to one minute).

Touted as “the world’s largest book trade autographing program”, the extensive list includes authors of all genres. I’ve listed a few travel based ones. Here’s the full list and schedule.

Francis Tapon, author of Hike Your Own Hike: 7 Life Lessons from Backpacking Across America: Friday, May 19, 2006

Molly Sullivan, author of Las Vegas Little Red Book: A Girl’s Guide to the Perfect Vegas Weekend: Friday, May 19, 2006
