I had a great shindig in Toronto with a bunch of ladies including Michele Petersen. Michele, who wrote “Hat Head” from Sand in My Bra spearheaded the event and led me to Wordstock 2004 where I was able to sit in on a humor writing class. But back to the women…there were six of us including Brigid Kelso, who wrote “Open Up and Say Om” for Whose Panties Are These?”.

But instead of me inspiring a writing group to get out there and sell their work, they inspired me. Michele writes three queries a day and has become so successful at it, that she now needs to slow down because of all her acceptance letters. Go Michele! And the others talked about their contributions to the Globe and Mail, as well as enRoute, among others. It was fun hanging out with them. Especially since besides normal networking, they do a little social networking on the side. Too bad I live so far away!

So, to make the most of this recent trip up north…Here are some market leads for you, eh?

  1. Hey Jen,

You asked if I’d comment on Canadian Market leads. Even though I’m Canadian I haven’t written for a lot of Canadian mags, although I have written for the Globe and Mail quite a bit (mainly travel book reviews), Outpost (a travel mag, really great!) and Canadian Geographic. Outpost is looking for original off-beat travel stories but they take forever to get back to you; keep trying. Canadian Geographic is highly professional and quite mainstream but pay really well and are wonderful to work with. The Globe is also very professional but a newspaper so very busy. They have an excellent travel section every Saturday with lots of good color photos and usually good stories (although mostly the typical tourist stuff).

  2. PB–all writers can only hope to have a fan as loyal as you are to Laurie. I hope you get to meet her soon. Word on the street is that she might be teaching a travel writing class at the uni in Guelph early 2005. I don’t know if you will be in SF at all then, but tix were cheap from the Midwest. $200ish. I haven’t looked at them from California yet, but check it out. It’s a lovely town. I think you’d enjoy it. And if you were going…maybe I’d come up, too.

you know I just might look into that – I expect I will go there for the civic honour the town must surely give to its finest daughter….

Early 2005 is going to be spent feeling sore and sorry for myself again….

  4. I have a new phone number. Email me and lets talk. I liked it there. Had fun there. The store would be happy to do a signing for me. Lets try and go again at the same time. Of course at the same time Laurie is doing her talk. I already know the bars I want to show you!
