“Copley News Service syndicates columns on finance, travel, food, arts, lifestyle and opinion, as well as editorial cartoons and comic strips. We look for writers who are well known as experts in their fields and for cartoonists whose wit and artistic talent combine to create fresh new perspectives. If you feel your work fits this description, please follow these submission guidelines”

Submission Guidelines.

Half way down the page they have specific guidelines for travel stories. I thought that this was good advice for writing travel articles no matter where you are sending it.

  • “Include people in your story, and if possible, let them speak. This immediately breathes life into your piece. Use anecdotes that illustrate how people in a given place live and react. Describe the colors, the sounds, flavors and smells of the place. The stories that are most disappointing are those that read like travel brochures, simply listing what can be done in a particular city. Make sure the reader knows you were there and immersed in the culture.”

  • “Avoid trite phrases and cliches such as “something for everyone,” “city of contrasts,” “East meets West,” etc. Also avoid overuse of adjectives, especially empty ones such as “beautiful,” “wonderful” and “majestic.” Invest every word with energy and meaning.”

NOTE: They are only looking for material that has not been published anywhere else.
