The Symposium for Professional Travel Writers will take place August 27-31, 2003 at the highly acclaimed resort, The Greenbrier. Created and directed by Antonia Allegra, this is the first year The Symposium has been held.

It is not clear to me if there will be byline police administering who is a professional travel writer and who is not, but by all means try and get in on this conference if you can. It’d be like going on holiday and talking shop with some of the nation’s most respected travel journalists.

“nestled on 6,500 acres in the scenic Allegheny Mountains in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. The Greenbrier offers more than 50 activities, including three, 18-hole championship golf courses, a new golf academy, a gallery of fine shops and a host of traditional amenities which have distinguished this resort for more than 200 years.”

At this inner club of travel writing, discuss how travel writing is evolving in today’s multi-media world, travel writing for books, the agent – writing relationship, travel writing for magazines, “Free Associating: To Freebie or Not to Freebie,” and more.

Some of the headliners include:
Alison DaRosa, travel writer of the San Diego Union Tribune, and six time Lowell Thomas Travel Award winner.
Larry Habegger, executive editor of Travelers’ Tales.
Robert Holmes, one of the world’s foremost travel photographers.
Randy Johnson, editor of HEMISPHERES
Mary Alice Kellogg, a veteran travel writer who’s writing has appeared in Travel + Leisure, Conde Nast Traveler, GQ, TV Guide, Ladies Home Journal, More, the New York Post and Diversion, among other publications.

Visit their bio page for more information on the other faculty members.

Registration is available online. One scholarship will be awarded to a participant attending this year’s Symposium.
