I saw Cameron Crowe’s Elizabethtown this past weekend. I thought it was good, but not blow me away great like Almost Famous, or Zach Braff’s Garden State by . Don’t get me wrong, I’m definitely not harshing E-town…the beau thought it was fantastic.

But the reason I wanted to talk about it was the road trip sequence in the end. That was my favorite part. I’ve driven some of the same roads that Orlando Bloom’s character did, and it was a nice reminder about how good it feels to drive across country. I don’t want to give anything away, but the map that he used was the coolest thing ever. I left thinking, how come I’ve never given someone something like that? I’d like to think that I can be that creative, but I also know that it would take SO much time. And the energy…sheesh!

There was another aspect of the movie related to travel that I could chew on…unrequited trips. Kinda like love, but in the travel sense. Trips you’ve always wanted to go on with someone, but never have. Why is that? Are there any trips that you’ve always wanted to take with your father, sister, brother, friend…anybody?

This is not a call for Leif to write me and ask me again to do Amazing Race with him…no, that’s not why I’m bringing it up. But it’s definitely something to think about. I think I’ve always wanted to go to Nepal with James and Larry and Raj of Travelers’ Tales. But who knows if we ever will because of kids and jobs. Other than that, I haven’t really dreamed of travel with other people. I wanted to go on an African safari for my honeymoon…had always thought about that…but that’s not going to happen.

I don’t know. Just chew on it, see Elizabethtown, and see what kind of things stir in you about life. There is plenty there to inspire a good think.

  1. Yes! I am so excited about taking a similar road trip this summer. He started of course in the Elizabethtown/Louisville, KY area. The big statue of Jesus and Dino World are in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. The Elvis place and the Lorraine Motel where MLK was shot is in Memphis, TN. I can’t figure out where the 2nd largest farmers’ market is.

here’s more info: https://www.writingstudio.co.za/page1024.html and goto the middle section about the road trip

Road Trip On, Life’s Journey, and God speed

  2. I Love the road trip sequence in the end of the movie. its my favorite part and has inspired me to take a drive too. the second largest farmers market was a made up place near the desert. they filmed it in some civic center. i think every other place was real though. 🙂

by far my favorite movie. i even have the amazing soundtrack!

  3. Hi…I’m an italian girl who’s trying to organize a great road trip as Claire’s one…and desperately looking for friends who are really into this trip.I loved the movie and that part of America always fashinated me so much.
Please if somebody can help me to find maps, hotels, car rent, web sites and give some advices…or at least go with me…just answer.
    Thanx
    Much love, Bia

  4. I ended up on this site merely because I also was trying to figure out where the 2nd Largest Farmer’s Market is…

I agree that this wasn’t the best Cameron Crowe film (Almost Famous is), but it was definately great in it’s own way. I’m also taking an Elizabeth town inspired road trip this Summer…I’m heading West from Washington and across the Rockies, so, not in the South at all, however it is nonetheless my own unrequited road trip..Just me and my dog Ribbon…we’re even going so deep into our roots that we are Motel 6ing it all the way to our temporary destination in Colorado…we upgraded to Super 8 for that, but what is more American for a road trip than Motel 6?

Anyway, just ended up on this site and wanted to comment.

    Cheers!

    Denise:-)

  5. In the movie Elizabethtown Drew and Claire meet in there cars and got to a bridge type place where they sit overlooking woods adn a Lake or river of some sort, Does anyone know where they are at?

  6. I too enjoyed the driving sequence of Elizabethtown…not sure I agree with some of the reviews…I really liked the movie! I was also searching for the world’s second largest farmers market—and happened on this site…..enjoy your journey, taken.

  7. LOL. I\’m also here looking for the World\’s 2nd Largest Farmer\’s Market. I guess the earlier post is right, that it\’s a made up place. I\’m from Kentucky, very near where this was shot, so I REALLY like this movie. I remember the excitement when the word was out that Hollywood was coming!!!!! We have taken two two week trips accross the country. One was up North then accross to Yellowstone then down the California coast back accross the South in 1997. It was awesome. Such a beautiful country. I recommend this to everyone!!! Take the family & ENJOY!!!!

  8. I’m another person who was looking for the 2nd Largest Farmers Market. Sorry to hear that it’s fictional.
By the way, Elizabethtown is a better movie than it’s given credit for. Definitely worth seeing.

  9. Well boys and girls, I happen to know where the “2nd Largest Farmers Market in the World” was filmed – but you should know it was made up… The scenery you see is actually Scotts Bluff National Monument in Scottsbluff, NE… I live near there and recommend you visit if you get a chance…

  10. To funny, my husband and I just finished watching E-Town and I have to say, we loved it! I wasn’t sure about it, seeing how it didn’t get good reviews, but what do they know anyway?
I am also here looking for the 2nd largest farmers market, and have to say I’m a bit disappointed that it doesn’t exsist.
Every year we travel some of the same roads taken during “Drew’s” journey – either traveling from Kansas to Colorado or from Kansas to South Carolina – there are so many different places to see along the way.

  11. meek—it’s the survivor tree and it’s in oklahoma city, ok. the tree was very close to the murrah building (that was blown up in 1995). over half of it was blown off, yet the tree kept growing. the okc memorial is also shown in the film.

  12. Here\’s your route….

Start in E-Etown and take I-24 south to the KY-TN border. From Union City, TN head south toe Dyersburg, 51 south to Memphis. YOu can visit the Loraine Motel and the National Civil Rights Hall of Fame. Don\’t forget Graceland! I-40 takes you across the Mississippi to Arkansas. Follow I-40 to Little Rock (stop in Scott, AR and have Hubcap burger)….At Conway, AR, TAKE 65 North to Harrison and 62 over to Eureka. The Christ of the Ozarks statue is there…also there is a yellow bridge in the movie that is out of sequence….it shows it in Kentucky..but is actually in Beaver, AR on the way to Bentonville form Eureka Springs. (ask locals in Eureka for directions..it\’s easy.) Stop in Bentonville at the Wal-Mart visitor\’s center (where I live). Travel I-540 s to Sprindale, Ar and take 412 over to Tulsa, 44 to OKC (survivior tree). Take I-35
N to Wichita…take 54 to Pratt..comtine to Greensburg (this was the town the tonardo wiped out completely in the Spring of 07. 54 to Dodge City (Boot Hill) The farmers market would have been somewhere between Garden City and Lamar, CO. From Lamar go to Peublo and up to Colorado, Springs…plan to spend two days here…one in Manitou Springs and one in Garden of the Gods, Pike\’s Peak and Cliff Dwellers.

  13. me and my husband are also planning a cross country road trip much like or even the same route as elizabethtown. Any ideas that would give us history, amusement, and a chance to explore the open road? Its for our 3year anniversery in september….

  14. “In the movie Elizabethtown Drew and Claire meet in there cars and got to a bridge type place where they sit overlooking woods adn a Lake or river of some sort, Does anyone know where they are at”

The park is called Otter Creek Park just south west of Louisville on Kentucky highway KY1639.
it’s part of the City of Louisville Parks. The stone ledge is behind the convention center (not shown in the movie) and overlooks the Ohio River. Awesome view!

  15. Back in 1994, I drove from Los Angeles to Northern Virginia, most of it along I-40, and visited some of the same places shown in the movie. Elizabethtown brought back some great memories. Everyone should do a cross-country drive at least once in his or her lifetime. It’s something you will remember forever.

  16. I think a club for people looking for the worlds 2nd largest farmers market may be in order. Obviously it does exist, just maybe not like in the movie. I do know that thereis a kick ass farmers market in des moines, iowa on saturday mornings when its not winter. worth a road trip stop for sure!

  17. We both loved the movie — something for both husband & wife. Wish they put the orignally cut material back into the DVD. When I read some of the negative reviews, wonder if it is really about the film quality or a judgement on a life outlook reflected in the story. If you are looking for joy, this is create.

  18. haha i just had to add that i was looking for the worlds 2nd largest farmers market too. Im from nebraska and i saw on the movie when they were at the farmers market a bunch of signs for nebraska so i was like wow ive lived here almost my whole life and i never knew we had that…its kind of sad to hear its not true. but i must say that nebraska is a beautiful place and (during the summer) everyone must visit it at least once in your life! great place for a road trip! 🙂

  19. I wish someone would make me a trip! LOL
I will be traveling from NC to home NY soon…My hubby is going overseas in the war for a year…It will be a long drive home after the send off…

  20. I, as well, am looking for the pretend Farmers Market! You would think that some farmers market that was really big would capitolize on the movie’s mention of it.

With inspiration from this movie, I tried making a roadtrip scrapbook/mapbook like the one in the film. It takes A LOT OF TIME, much more then Claire would have had in the few days she knew Drew! Not only time, but the materials! Wow! How amazing was that map? I might just look on ebay for vintage stickers and materials, etc, next trip I go on.

It was an amazing film and Im sure inspired many people to see this beautiful country via the automobile, as it has me.

  21. There has to be a farmers market like the one in the movie… If any one is familiar with the food network channel .. I beleive i saw it there??

  22. LOL….I was looking for the “2nd largest farmers market in the world” too when I stumbled across this site. I find the movie inspiring thats for sure! Not just to take a road trip… but in many other ways too… in a way, life is like a long road trip… and I just LOVE Claire’s outlook on life… somedays I wish I could be more like her. I also wish I had all the free time to take lots of road trips. 🙂

  23. so this is crazy is the farmers market really fake? cause thats extreamly dissapointing. ok anyways! im glad people like this movie cause all my friends didnt. and i love it. lol ok
