The internet is the place to be when it comes to travel writing, and if you are in the San Francisco area, there is an internship at WCities which may be a great place to start. The intern will be working with one of the Assistant Editors who is in charge of managing a network of local writers that WCities employs in different areas around the world. This means that not only will you get an introduction to the world of travel websites and databases but also working with freelance travel writers.

The internship entails:
-Copy editing
-Learning the basic administration of the website
-Writing some original content (mostly descriptions of hotels, attractions, etc.)

How to apply:
Send in a resume and short cover letter detailing your current situation and why you’d be a good fit for the job. I can’t find an email address, but you can reply to the Craigslist ad here.

The internship is 3 months (8-15 hours/week) and although unpaid, you can get college credit. If you do a good job, there may also be room for growth at the end of the 3 month stint.

Don’t want to intern? WCities is always looking for contributors that are based in metropolitan areas to write up Points of Interest (restaurants, hotels, bars, etc.). If you are interested in becoming a contributor you can apply on the WCities website. I believe they pay $10 for about a 100 word Point of Interest. If you can bust out a few in an hour it might be worth doing.
