That's right, Travelers' Tales is celebrating one whole decade in travel book publishing!

It’s shocking. I met Larry Habegger at Book Passage where he was reading from their 2nd book, Mexico. I became their first intern during book three, India. And now their love, sweat, and tears have birthed more than 75 titles. The most recent book, The Best Travelers’ Tales 2004, celebrates their anniversary and a new “Best” will be published every February in conjunction with Chinese New Year.

So, all you travel monkeys, get on over to Book Passage in Corte Madera this Friday night to celebrate. (Friday, Mar. 5 at 7 p.m.)

Executive Editor Larry Habegger will be telling stories, Simon Winchester and other contributors to The Best TT 2004 will be reading excerpts. Co-founder James O’Reilly will be living the true TT spirit on a ship bound for Seychelles. His brother, Tim O’Reilly, also a co-founder of TT, will be present.

And if I could be there, I’d be wrapping Larry and Tim up in foil. Happy aluminum Travelers’ Tales! You are the first friends that made me feel like I was home, you are at the foundation of my adulthood, all of you have become my family, and I love you dearly. I’ll be raising a toast in London to the next ten years.

We can say thanks to the Writers Center of Marin and Book Passage for hosting the special event.

PS–if you do go, and you better if only for the excellent networking opportunity, give Larry a very firm handshake. He’ll tell you why.

PPS–And if God forbid you don’t know who Travelers’ Tales is, please read James’s Preface to the Best Travelers’ Tales 2004. Read it anyway, we’re all travel writers here, and I think you’d enjoy it. I did.

  1. I think so, but not sure. That is definitely not a reason to go if it’s your deciding factor.

BTW, don’t you have a Simon Winchester book on your shelves? Bring it and get it signed, or better yet. Support a great independent bookstore like Book Passage and get another one of his many travel classics.
