Andrea Johnson just showed me a card she got in the mail from Blue Magazine.
It reads, “We regret to inform you that Blue Magazine has ceased publication…”
Bummer. If you are a subscriber they are finishing your term with copies of Backpacker Magazine. First Trips. Now Blue. It’s too bad. What did you think of Blue? It covered alternative adventure travel. Fairly edgy with an extreme feel. Maybe too edgy? Is this why it couldn’t last? I still remember seeing the first issue at Larry’s cave way back before the TT office even existed.
I know people that will miss the magazine. Lets hope the editors go on to more profitable publishing ventures…hopefully still in travel. Or wherever they want to be.
I won’t miss Blue much, but I am still in tears that Escape magazine is gone.
I’m curious, does anyone know if Modern Nomad (formally PLACES) is still in publication? I’ve been waiting for the latest issue to be released – there hasn’t been anything new since the Spring. Any info would be much appreciated.
Laura, they mention on their site that they had some printing probs and the new issue should be out soon.

an email in the past asking about their status and have received no response. But I haven’t yet written a formal letter or called their vendors.
I’m going to email the publisher now and see if I can get an answer this time around.
The demise of wonderful publications is simply testimony to to the fact that people don’t read much, they read about travel and adventure even less, and that the hardest part of marketing even a good idea is storming the citadel of distribution and media. Travelers’ Tales, for instance, has been reviewed but a few times (in 10 years of publishing) in San Francisco newspaper and magazines–and it’s not for want of tryiing!
Re Passionfruit, I’ve assumed they’re no more; would be interested to hear if I’m wrong on that score. Re whether people read of not… I don’t know about the US, but certainly in SA, with the cost of living having become as it is, the purchase of magazines (not to mention subscriptions) has become a luxury. I even find myself taking more and more books out of the library.
I wonder if the same could be true for the US…
Re: Passionfruit. They stopped their operation a couple of years ago, but at the time they left it open to restart if time/market allowed.
I haven’t talked with the editor in about a year, so it would be interesting to hear what response you (Jen) get if you contact her.

It sure is (Jill R) baby! The editor is a neighbor of a friend of mine, so if you don’t get word back from her, I can ask my friend what she knows.
