Has anyone read Michael Palin’s Himalaya book? I just saw this article on MSNBC.com, “Python actor’s book to be required reading.”
Himalaya by Michael Palin.
I haven’t read it. But I bet we can all think of a few required reading travel books we’d like to add to our nearest jr high, high school, and college geography classes.
I watched the series on television, and it was fabulous, so I checked the book out of the library and drooled over it for awhile (it’s really beautiful) but never got ’round to reading it.
I decided several years ago that if I ever came by a cash windfall (lottery, etc) I’d buy and donate a ton of “must-read” travel books to my former high school’s library. Kids around there really need inspiration to get out and see the world.
I was lucky to find this book in a used book store in Ghorepani, along the Annapurna circuit trek in Nepal’s himalayas. It was the perfect setting for the reading, especially after a long day hiking. I could often read about some of the cultural ennui that I had seen and expereinced during the day. I would love to see the series….may have to look for that on Netflix now that I’m back in the US!
I too saw this book at a store in Nepal, and made a mental note to myself to pick it up as soon as I got back Stateside.
Well, I bought it last week, and it is now sitting on my bedside table, and I read it everynight before bed. I’m loving it, and would highly reccomend it to you all.
Wow, I didn’t know that there was a book, too! I saw the miniseries on the Travel Channel and fell in love with it. Thanks for the info!
