So…there have been a few developments since I posted about the book release party for A Sense of Place at the Pan Pacific in San Francisco. (“Inside to the Big Leaguers”)

First, Simon Winchester will be joining the event.
Second, as of yesterday, Book TV will be there, too.

Earlier this week Book TV did a segment on Simon. You can watch/read up on it here,“In Depth: Simon Winchester”.

The event costs $30 and proceeds will go to Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s City Lights Foundation. It’s selling out fast so hurry up and get your ticket.

If you’re just tuning in now, read on for a details about the event and the book.

A Sense of Place: Great Travel Writers Talk About Their Craft, Lives, and Inspiration by Michael Shapiro

For two years, Michael Shapiro roamed the world interviewing leading travel writers where they live. He met Jan Morris in Wales, Tim Cahill in Montana, Frances Mayes in Tuscany, and Peter Matthiessen at the east end of Long Island. He caught up with Pico Iyer in California and met Bill Bryson in New Hampshire just before Bryson moved back to England. The result is a fascinating collection of conversations ranging from how travel has deepened each writer’s understanding of the world to how these authors developed the skills and discipline to succeed as writers.

At a time when life on Earth is becoming ever more complex, Shapiro turned to leading travel writers to try to make sense of the world at the dawn of the 21st century. Each chapter begins with an insightful introduction about the author’s
life and work, followed by a conversation rendered in question-and-answer format. In addition to the writers mentioned above, Shapiro interviewed Paul Theroux, Isabel Allende, Simon Winchester, Arthur Frommer, Redmond O’Hanlon, Jonathan Raban, Rick Steves, and many others.

Advance copies will be available at two San Francisco Bay Area events in August.
